Hard Drive Case: Portable Hard Drive Cases and Enclosures
What is a Hard Drive Case
Internet hard drives are found in both desktop and laptop computers. These hard drives look far different than the portable, external hard drives you carry around between computer systems. This is because the hard drive does not have an actual case while inside a computer. The hard drive is secure inside the computer and doesn't need the protective shell an external drive typically has. Of course, it is possible to use an internal hard drive as a portable, external drive, but it is very important to have a hard drive case for it. This not only functions as a safety feature to prevent any damage to the drive, but it also allows you to connect the hard drive to a USB port on a computer system, as internal hard drives use different connection methods than external drives.
Internet hard drives are easy to damage, once outside of the computer case. The hard drive is made up of a spinning disk, and if the motor or any other area of the disk become damaged, the entire hard drive is rendered basically useless. With the lack of protection, it is easy to damage such a hard drive, as dropping the drive or even moving it suddenly and quickly can cause the equipment to not properly work. This is why having a hard drive case is so important.
When shopping around for a hard drive case for your internal hard drive, you need to locate the appropriate size of a hard drive case. Laptop computers generally use a 2.5 inch hard drive, while desktop computers use a 3.5 inch hard drive. You need a case that is able to house the specific hard drive, otherwise it is not going to properly fit inside the case. The case is basically a shell that goes around the drive, protecting it from damage.
The hard drive case also has a connector that fits into the cable port on the side of the hard drive. Once the case is closed you are then able to connect the internal hard drive to an external connection (generally USB, although there are FireWire, Thunderbolt and several other connections available on different hard drive cases, you just need to determine what is the best connection method for your drive and your computers). Buying an internal hard drive and a hard drive case is often times less expensive than buying a standard external hard drive.
